"you got beef? i got vegetables."
I got a call yesterday from Mark Lofstrom asking me to be co-chair of the 2006 LGBT Family Reunion.

Yeah. Whoa.

What's even more amazing to me is that i'm seriously considering it. If they'd asked me six months ago, I'd have said never in a million years. (Well, not out loud...) Besides needing a break from Carleton in general, I left with a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth as far as the whole queer organizing thing goes. But I think I need to get over myself, and besides, I can't complain if I'm not trying to contribute somehow, right? I'd actually been thinking over the last couple of weeks that I'd like to get a little more involved. And I do think I have some good ideas...

So, I need your input. I don't want you to tell me whether you think I should accept, just if there are things you think I should consider and might not have thought of.

Like, "whoa, kate, that means you'd have to help lead meetings where you might be the youngest person in the room" or "you could come visit me while you're in northfield for said meetings!" or "are you sure you want to get up in front of a room of people and try to convince them to give money to carleton?"

Hit me.

house house house! where is this lovely abode?

and as far as i can tell from the conversation i had with mark, the responsibilities mostly have to do with big-picture thematic planning, recruiting other planning-committee members, making sure that the various people dealing with details are talking to each other, and then hosting at least one of the dinners. (which, you may remember, my attention loving self tended to do a lot of at carleton.) most of this will take place via email and phone, but i'd be flying out there occasionally as well.

it's on seventh and union!

and it sounds like a pretty high-profile and rather you-like job, i think you should do it.

yeah, what would you have to do? i think i would think of it as your chance to do what you want, the way you want to do it, hopefully being an alum would mean that you wouldn't be limited in the things you'd want to do. but it seems like it could be a frustrating thing. but again, i have no idea what that job would entail.

anyway, i like the idea of you being involved in it. who would be the other co-chair?

see my response to dana. and i agree with you: i think the potential for frustration and positive contribution are both high.

as for the other co-chair, i don't remember the name, but mark said the other person he had asked is a man who graduated sometime in the 70's.

See, that's what I said!

Kate, maybe this'll be a chance to make peace with Kaaren / transition away from student-y and into alum-y perspective? Plus, I *know* you want to see what we do with the House's decor...

btw, Leah, we are *so* going to decorate :).

precisely.

okay, i think i'm gonna do it. i still have to talk to mark about travel costs, but i assume they're not planning to make me pay my own way out there several times in the next year.

Plus you'd get to see the entire Mpls contingent of your friends (our numbers have swelled recently, after getting both Cassie and Wizard, with the possible soon addition of Josh), and we miss you! Lots! :)

See if you can con them into getting a ticket for your sweetie, too. ;)

yay - we get to see a Kate soon. Make sure we know when this is!

Joe

i'm on the out after carleton committee at least through graduation, so maybe that means there would be a meeting where you AND i could be the youngest people in the room. and by that, i mean be the AWESOMEST people in the room.
